Privacy

We are a weekly local email. We collect the least that makes that possible, we do not sell it, and you can leave in one tap.

What we hold, and why

• Your email address — so we can send you the paper. Nothing else.
• The zip codes you picked — so the edition you get is about where you live rather than the whole county.
• When and where you signed up — the date, and which page the form was on. This is our evidence that you asked for it; it is what makes a complaint answerable.
• What you submitted, if you sent us an event or asked to be in the directory — the details you typed, and an address to reach you about them.

What we do not do

• No selling, no sharing, no renting of your address, to anyone, ever. There is no version of this paper where that changes.
• No tracking cookies and no ad networks. Our analytics are self-hosted and cookieless: we can see that a page was read, not who read it.
• No profile of you. We do not know your name unless you told us, and we do not try to find out.
• No third-party captcha. The "are you human" check runs on our own hardware and reports nothing to anyone.

Your IP address

Like every web server, ours sees the address your request came from. We use it for two things and keep it for neither:

• Rate limiting — so one machine cannot submit a thousand events. The counter lives in memory for an hour and is then gone.
• Guessing your town, once, on the home page, to save you typing a zip. The lookup runs against a database file on our own server; nothing is sent to anyone and no address is written down.

How long we keep it

Your subscription lasts until you end it. When you unsubscribe we keep one thing: your address on a suppression list, so that a future import or a well-meaning mistake cannot put you back on. That list exists to protect you from us.

Events and directory listings are published content and stay in the archive, because an edition that changes after it was sent is not an archive.

Getting out, or getting a copy

• Unsubscribe — one tap at the bottom of every edition. It takes effect immediately, without a login, without a "are you sure", and without routing you through a preference page first.
• Change your areas — the sign-in link on any page mails you a one-hour link to your preferences. We deliberately do not put a permanent login link in an email: an email sitting in an inbox should not be a live session.
• Ask for a copy, a correction, or deletion — write to the publisher below and we will do it. There is no form to fill in.

Who else touches it

The mail has to go through a sending service to reach your inbox; that provider processes your address to deliver it and for nothing else. Everything else — the website, the database, the search, the human check, the town maps — runs on our own machines.

The maps and the business listings come from OpenStreetMap, the town names from GeoNames and the U.S. Census. Those are things we read, not places your data goes.

Children

This is a newsletter about bin days and school concerts. It is not for children, and we do not knowingly collect anything from anyone under 13.

If this page changes

We will say so in an edition. A privacy policy that changes quietly is worth nothing.
